Nearly every dryer complaint traces to one of three things: heat, airflow, or the drum turning. Which one decides how long we'll be.
Book a visitElectric models lose the heating element or a thermal fuse. Gas models lose the igniter or the flame sensor. Both are routine repairs.
Restricted airflow, almost every time. A blocked vent run doubles the work the dryer does and is the leading fire risk in any laundry room.
A snapped belt is the usual answer, though worn drum rollers or a seized idler pulley give the same result with more noise beforehand.
Support rollers and the idler flatten with age. Dealt with early the parts are cheap. Ignored, they take the belt and eventually the motor with them.
The thermal fuse is doing its job and shutting down an overheating machine. The cause sits upstream in the airflow or a stuck thermostat.
A door switch, start switch or thermal fuse has broken the circuit. We test each rather than replacing all three on spec.
Heat output and airflow get measured together, because one masks the other. A dryer with a weakening element and a choked vent looks identical to one with only an element problem until both are checked.
Every visit includes an inspection of the vent run. If the duct is packed we say so, because a restricted vent is both a genuine fire risk and the reason a new element fails early.
Dryer codes point mainly at heat, airflow and moisture sensing. Here is what the common ones indicate.
Samsung
The machine has measured how little air is moving and flagged the duct.

Element or thermistor. Either nothing warms, or the readings are nonsense.
LG
Door position not confirmed, varying by model year.
Whirlpool / Maytag
Thermistor circuit fault, so the board disables heating as a precaution.
Whirlpool
Control board fault, or restricted airflow picked up by the moisture sensor.
GE
Heater relay or element circuit open. The drum spins cold.
Whirlpool / Maytag
Supply interrupted during a cycle. Once is nothing, repeatedly is worth checking.
Frigidaire / Electrolux
Sensor or control fault, typically with the cycle ending prematurely.
Take vent codes seriously. A blocked duct makes the machine run hotter and longer, which is how most dryer fires start and why replacement elements sometimes fail within a year.
Vented dryers through to heat-pump and Speed Queen units. Inglis and Amana are the machines we see most in local laundry rooms.
Laundry calls right across the township, including the older houses where the duct takes a long, awkward route and hasn't been cleared in years.
