Where ovens tend to fail

Ovens break down in recognisable patterns, and the pattern you describe on the phone tells us a good deal before the panel comes off.

01

No heat whatsoever

On gas models the igniter has usually weakened past the point where it draws enough current to open the safety valve. On electric ovens, the bake element has gone open circuit.

02

Running thirty degrees out

The temperature sensor has drifted or the thermostat needs recalibrating. Scones browning underneath while the tops stay pale is the giveaway.

03

Preheating takes an age

A weakening element or igniter still functions, just slowly. If preheat now takes twice what it used to, the component is on borrowed time.

04

A code on the display

Boards report sensor faults, welded relays and lock mechanism trouble. We read what it says, then confirm it independently.

05

Door sitting loose

A hardened gasket or a worn hinge lets heat escape, and the first sign is usually uneven results rather than an obviously loose door.

06

Grill works, bake doesn't

Two separate elements on two separate circuits. One functioning and the other not narrows the diagnosis considerably.

How we approach an oven

We test the element or igniter under load, compare the sensor against a reference reading, and watch what the board actually does rather than what it claims. Oven components are expensive enough that guessing gets costly fast.

Gas appliances stay with technicians licensed for that work. Where a valve or connection looks doubtful we shut the unit down and explain exactly why, rather than handing back something we wouldn't run in our own kitchens.

Reading the code on the panel

Modern ovens lock themselves and flash a code when something goes wrong. Here is what the common ones point toward.

F1

GE / Whirlpool

Board or keypad fault, typically a key the board sees as permanently held down.

F2

Whirlpool / KitchenAid

The oven believes it is too hot. A wandering sensor, sometimes a relay welded shut.

F3 / F4

Whirlpool / Maytag

Sensor circuit open or shorted, so the oven disables heating rather than guess.

F9

Whirlpool

Lock motor or latch switch. Heating stays off until the door position is confirmed.

E-0 / E-1

Samsung

Touch panel or control link error, often appearing after a cleaning cycle.

F19 / F10

Bosch

NTC sensor or overheat protection, with the appliance shutting itself down.

E6

Fisher & Paykel

Control module reporting a sensor or relay it can no longer drive.

LOC

LG / Frigidaire

Lock engaged or unverified, from a jammed mechanism or a failed switch.

Self-clean cycles account for a surprising share of these faults, because the heat stresses the sensor, the lock motor and the board together. Mention it when you call if the code appeared straight after cleaning.

Brands on our vans

Basic ranges through to built-in wall ovens. Moffat and Inglis still turn up regularly in Caledon homes, and we keep igniters and elements for both.

Everything was burning on the bottom and raw on top. He recalibrated the sensor, tested it with a probe, and it holds temperature properly now.

Wall oven locked itself shut with a code showing. He cleared it, replaced the latch motor and explained what triggers it. Tidy work.
